YOUTH RISING
PEER SUPPORT
All YR programs offer mental health support in a non-clinical setting using Youth Peer Advocates. Peer Advocates are young adults with lived experience in youth systems (foster care, mental health, juvenile justice, substance abuse treatment, etc.). Advocates develop 1:1 relationships with youth and empower them to set and meet life goals, access services, and improve the systems that serve them.
Our Peer Support model is tailored to each individual’s needs. Peer Advocates help establish trust and solidarity with participants while providing support and coaching to help youth navigate challenges.
Our goal is that youth have someone they can talk to whether they are experiencing mainstream challenges or high risk challenges like substance abuse, homelessness or housing insecurity, physical or mental abuse, trauma, depression, anxiety, body image, self acceptance and eating disorders.
We also tackle more common coming of age hurdles including problems in social settings, trouble at school, time management, and establishing healthy boundaries.
We believe that early intervention and prevention can make a huge difference in a vulnerable person’s life.
Our GRIT services have grown to meet the needs of the youth we serve and include restorative and transformative practices for youth who are at-risk or already justice involved and services for youth and young adults experiencing academic failure.
The GRIT program aims to engage and support young adults struggling in a nonjudgmental and supportive setting.
GRIT helps young people at risk of dropping out of school find their way back into completing their education.
In psychology, grit is a positive, non-cognitive trait based on an individual's perseverance of effort combined with the passion for a particular long-term goal or end state (a powerful motivation to achieve an objective). This perseverance of effort promotes the overcoming of obstacles or challenges that lie on the path to accomplishment and serves as a driving force in achievement realization.
